Special acoustics and comfort cooling essential for purpose-built autism centre

When a new, purpose-built specialist autism centre was to be constructed by Robertson Construction, Murray Building Services were awarded the contract to provide the building services.

The single storey centre was specially designed to meet the complex needs of children with autism and would feature a specialist sensory space, multi-use areas, hall and kitchen facilities.

Because a large number of people with autism either ignore or overreact to ordinary sights, sounds, smells and other sensations, we were required to install special acoustics along with a comfort cooling system to their 4G sensory room.

Other work included the installation of an underfloor heating system, gas pipework, gas fired boilers, heat recovery units, building management system, above ground drainage and full range of domestic services.

The £4.8m building was constructed on a vacant site next to the original Newfield School on Old Bank Lane, Blackburn between 2017-2018.
